The "Overview Effect," a term coined in 1987 by Frank White, refers to a cognitive shift in awareness experienced by many astronauts during spaceflight. It describes a perspective that moves beyond the 'artificial boundaries' of borders and nations. Throughout history, the success of the human species has been built on cooperation, evolving from groups of hunter-gatherers to early villages, kingdoms, countries, and empires. Each societal transformation required significant cognitive shifts that redefined the concepts of 'us' and 'them.' The Overview Effect aligns with this ongoing trend and is often discussed alongside the "Spaceship Earth" theory, famously popularised by Buckminster Fuller. In the context of the Anthropocene, this project brings the Overview Effect to the forefront, examining its significance from the space race to the birth of the environmental movement. I was responsible for designing and printing the work, ensuring that its visual communication effectively conveys the concept and its broader implications.
